Is there a World Milk Day?

Quite surprisingly there is World Milk Day, celebrated on the first of June every year since 2001. Established by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to recognize and celebrate the importance of milk as a global food and dairy sector. This day offers an opportunity to focus on activities related to the dairy sector. 2020 marked the 20th anniversary of World Milk Day!

This day is about creating awareness and importance of milk in healthy diets, responsible food production, and support of livelihoods and communities. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supports the cause by showing its data which indicates that the dairy sector supports more than one billion people and that over six billion people worldwide consume dairy products.

Each year it is celebrated with a new theme. In 2021 the theme focuses on Sustainability in the dairy sector with the message around the environment, nutrition, and socio-economics. Along with this they also plan to reintroduce dairy farming to the world.

Kishore Indukuri, an IIT alumnus left behind his life of luxury and came back to his roots. After returning to his hometown Kishore realized that there were very limited options for safe and hygienic milk in the city. To solve this problem he opened his dairy farm and invested in 20 cows. Today he earns over 44 crores. This is the power of the dairy business.

Happy World Milk Day!
